Austria’s new‑car market turned unexpectedly political in October 2026: a little‑known Chinese brand, Leapmotor, shot up the monthly rankings while established players posted mixed results — a development that matters for German and Austrian dealers, fleet buyers and policymakers watching EV adoption and pricing. The jump comes against an otherwise flat to slightly falling October market and follows Statistik Austria’s strong year‑to‑date growth for EVs.
Leapmotor’s October explosion — the numbers
Leapmotor recorded 674 new passenger‑car registrations in Austria in October 2026, up 476.1% from 117 in October 2025, lifting its monthly market share to about 2.8% and moving the brand from 27th to 13th in the monthly rankings, the company said. Year‑to‑date Leapmotor registrations reached 3,019 (January–October 2026), up 419.6% year‑on‑year. The manufacturer attributes the gains to an expanded model range and its Stellantis‑backed distribution push.
Leapmotor’s statement cites Statistik Austria as source for the raw registration figures; the national statistics office also shows strong overall market momentum in 2026, with EVs driving much of the growth through September. Two‑thirds of October‑to‑date registrations this year have been electrified in the aggregated data published so far.
Other winners — and where the incumbents stand
Stellantis‑affiliated brands were among the October success stories in Austria. Citroën grew its passenger‑car registrations in October by 12.6% to 570 units, outperforming a market that several brands described as slightly down in October. Citroën’s January–October tally reached 5,500 passenger cars, a 24.1% rise year‑on‑year.
Opel reported another strong month in the light‑commercial segment: 179 new light‑commercial registrations in October (+66%), and 988 total Opel vehicle registrations in October, lifting its overall market share to 3.6% for the month and pushing it toward a 2026 target of more than 10,000 new registrations. Opel attributed growth to a broad model lineup and strong fleet demand.
