Austrian automation cluster AT Styria has pushed a bid to make Styria an EU test‑region for humanoid and AI‑driven robotics — a move that would put Austrian plants and suppliers at the front of a Europe‑wide race to industrialise “physical AI.” The initiative, presented at the European Robotics and Automation Talks (ERAT) in Graz, aims to win the single Horizon Europe call that funds one flagship project of roughly €18 million for a multi‑partner pilot spanning Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Bavaria.
What AT Styria is proposing
The proposal groups research institutes (Joanneum Research, TU Graz, FH Campus 02), software and safety specialists (DCCS, BrightFlare) and industry partners including Magna Steyr. AT Styria says the EU call will open at the end of November 2026 and the consortium intends to submit a joint application in early 2027; if funded, the pilots could start in the first quarter of 2028. The cluster underlines that the Horizon money (around €18m) would be shared across international partners and real factory pilots rather than lab demonstrations.
The draft plan sets out three factory‑level pilots: (1) humanoid robots working at several production stations to feed machines and handle physically demanding tasks; (2) autonomous mobile robots for adaptable in‑plant logistics; and (3) KI‑based systems for quality control, inspection and maintenance. AT Styria and regional press note the emphasis on measurable industrial outcomes: takt time, reliability, integration cost and the moment a robot investment pays back.
Why car production is central
The consortium explicitly lists Magna Steyr among industry partners and includes pilot visits to Magna’s assembly and to other automation firms in the region. Steiermark.biz reported the planned timeline and technical focus, noting the intention to prove humanoid systems in live production lines — tasks directly relevant to bodyshop, sub‑assembly and sequencing operations in car manufacture. The site also quotes the detailed timetable published by AT Styria: EU call opening (mid‑to‑late November 2026) and an application deadline in March 2027 for the single available project.
